PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From Onr Special Correspondent.) Palmerston N., July 27. "Soil Conditions and Preparation" was tho subject of a very interesting address given by Mr. Frank Mnson, a practical horticulturist, at the Men's Social Club Inst night. The address contained a mass of most useful information, and was listened to with keen interest by a large number of members. At tho conclusion of his speech, Mr. Mason was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Next Friday the president of tho club, Mr. J. Davidson, will give au address on "Manures and Soils/ . Thero has been a strong feeling in Foxton that the recent fires were the work of an incendiary. Detective Quirlce has been making inquiries in reference to tho last outbreak, and his investigations have brought him to the conclusion that tho fire was the result of pure accident. _ . There was a large gathering of relative's and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William Fairhead at the Empire Hall last night, when their golden wedding was celebrated, Mr. J. A. Nash; Mayor of Palmerston, presiding over the assemblage. Among members of the family present were: Mr. W. Fairhead (Auckland), and Me'sdarues C. Mackio and E. 11. Sollett (of Auckland and Palmerston respectively). The health of Mr. and Mrs. Fairhead was proposed by the Mayor, and that of the family by Mr. W. Lewis. Congratulatory speeches were made by Messrs. N. 11. Nash, A. E. Bennett, C. G. Spooner, H. Kuhtze, and W. Anderson. A pleasant evening was passed with instrumental and vocal items and by dancing. At tho annual meeting of tho Manawatu Kennel Club, the following officers were elected:—President, Mr. T. It. Ilodder; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. Fj Durward and F. E. Watson; committee, Messrs. J. J. Lissiugton, A. J. Shailcr, T. Richards, and W. Beck; secretary, Mr. W. Beck. Tho annual exhibition of dogs will be held in conjunction with the Spring Show of the Manawatu A. and P. Association. Constable Purvis performed au extremely plucky act. in Main Street on Saturday. A pair of cab horses bolted from the Square about one o'clock, and made off down Maiu Street. The constable got a hold of the vehicle as tho borses galloped past, scrambled on the front, and made, bis way along the pole of the cab till ho got hold of tho reins and pulled the horses up. If the animals had been allowed to continue their course, there would inovitably have been a serious accidont, as Main Street was crowded with vehicles at the time. The Steeplechase and Ball Committees of the Manawatu Hunt met on Saturday night, and made final arrangements for their annual ball and steeplechase meeting, which takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
