BANK MANAGER AND INTRUDER
GAOL-BREAKER CATJGHT. (By Toleeraph.-Proee Association.! Wanganui, July 25. About 2 o'clock this afternoon a prisoner named George Albert Wollingford, who ie awaiting trial for ft series of tliefts from hotels here, escaped from gaol. Hβ had been in the washing-house, and in the momentary absence of the warder, disappeared.. The police spent an energetic five hours in search, until a. tclephono uiessoge from Mr. S. J. Gordon, manager of the' Bank of Australasia, announced that a bv.rglar was in his house. Constable Keciuin was promptly on tho scene, end found the "burglar" to be Wallingferd. Ho had got in through the window while the family'were at tea. Mr. Gordon had occasion to go into the front portion of the house, and there saw someone moving. Thinking that it was his son, he Bslicd: "What ore you doing here?" and tlw burglar oandidly replied, "I'm thieving." The arrest was an easy matter, and Wal-i linsford was watched until the police,arrived. It then transpired that the house of Bertram Lambert, on the other 6ido of tho road, had been entered. The'prieoner showed the police where he , had hidden the articles in his;swag. Altogether they totailed about .2110.
