' At the conclusion of play to-day tho Australians, who aro mooting Hampshire at Portsmouth, require 24 runs, with six wickets to fall, to escape an innings defeat. The County scored 371, and the colonials 197 and four for 147. To-day the Australians only batted 00 minutes before lunch, rain delaying the play, after (lie first over was bowled. At lunch the score was four for 100, Bardsley (41) and Gregory (17) batting. The attendance was good. On resuming, Gregory was taken in tho slips. Mimielt iuul Bardsley added 48 for tho sixth wicket. When ho had reached CO, Bardsley was yorked by Kennedy. He had been at the wickets two hours, and his score, made by a good allround display, included six fours. Matthews mado 10 in 15 minutes, but tho remainder collapsed. Jlinnett batted vigorously for an hour for ;58 before being run out. Ho hit eight fours. The innings lasted IGS minutes. Tho Australians followed on. The weather was bright, while 4000 people attended. Jlayno and Jennings opened to Brown, and Kennedy. Tho first four wickets went cheaply. Jennipgs was run out through tho fault of Jfayne, both being at ono end when tho bails were removed. Smith was caught off a hot return, and Jlayno was caught at tho wickets after batting 75 minutes. Bardsley was cleverly caught and bowled for 2, but Kelleway and Gregory mado a better stand, adding 85. They were still together when stumps were drawn. Fifty-one was hoisted after 40 minutes' play, and tho century in 115 minutes. ICelleway's leg-hitting ryul driving wore good, while Gregory excelled in all-round play.
