Sweden 133 America 1 129 British Empire /..... 118 RESULTS OF THE PAST GAMES. Tho Olympic Games were revived in 1890 at tho suggestion of Baron Pierro de Couhertin of Paris. The idea was enthusiastically taken up by M. George Averolph, a Greek of Alexandria, and tho ancient Stadium at Athens was restored by his generosity. Tho games at Athens of 1898 were a comparatively small affair. Competitors came from as far afield as America, but they were not very numerous, tho total number of outsiders being about 100. ,'l'ho Marathon was won by a Greek in good time. Some of the events were farcical. In 1900 tlio Games were held ill 'Paris, in connection with tho exhibition of that year. Of the 23 athletic events, no fewer than 17 were won by the Americans, who were tho only nation which had begun to take tho Games really seriously. A Frenchman won the Marathon. . The St. Louis Games of 1!)04 were again held in connection with an exhibition. The Americans won 24 of. the 26 athletic events, leaving tlio throwing of the 501b. weight to a Canadian, and the lifting competition to a Greek. England was not represented at all. In 1906 the Games were again held at Athens. The Americans had a fully organised team, and met with the greatest success in' the athletic events. In the remainder of the competitions they wero scarcely renresented, and on the total results tlio French were declared tho winners. with Great Britain second, Greece third, and America fourth. Great Britain's team of athletes was far from being representative. At the Games of London in 1908 tho position on the wliolo series of contests was ns follows:— Total Countrv. Wins. United Kingdom .18 United States 22 ' Sweden 7 The position of tlio other countries was: —France, 4 wins; Hungary, 3; Germany, 2; Italy. 2: Canada, 2; Norway, 2; South Africa, 1: Finland, Is Belgium. 1. When the results of the strictly athletic events at the 1908 Games are analysed, Britain is found on a fairly'eoual footing with' tho United States, but in tho field events her position was far inferior.
