Yesterday, afternoon will have very delightful memories for the children who were entertained at the children's fancy dress ball given by their Excellencies Lord and Lady Islington at Government House, and not only the children, but the grown-ups as well, for it was a very beautiful sight that they watched in the ballroom. All countries, all times, and all manner of personages, historical or otherwise, met together, and, if they had been enemies in tho years gone by, time had softened their animosities and made them friends. Crusaders had waked up from their long sleep, and (war forgotten) found ■ themselves in the company of demure little Quakeresses; Early Victorian ladies, and even a quaint little "Powder Puff," to say nothing of Dresden Shepherdesses, "Boy Blues," and others. It was in the dancing of tho cotillion that the various characters were seen to advantage, and it made a perfectly fascinating sight. Not the least part of tho pleasure about it to tho children were the favours which they received. Afterwards they marched two by two into the diningroom, whero yet another pleasure waited them. Their Excellencies gayo themselves up entirely to the entertainment of their small guests, and danced with them during a large part of the afternoon. Before their departure, trays of toy 6 and presents of all -descriptions wero brought in, and the children left for their horn'es simplv'laden with delightful things. Lady Islington wore a gown of soft pink, with a fichu of lace. The Hon. Joan Dickson Poynder was a vivid little figure in a beautiful Turkish costume. Miss Stapleton Cotton, Mr. and Mrs. Guise, Captain Estcourt, and Captain M'Dougall, A.D.C.'s, wero present, and added greatly to the pleasure of tho small children by dancing with them.
