NO RESPONSE.
LETTER BY CORRESPONDENT. The following letter, in answer to the suggestion of "Constant Reader" re tho sending of hooks, magazines,' etc., to •country districts and out-of-the-way places, lias been received from the secretary of tho Victoria League:— Dear Imogen,—l notioe in your column this morning some remarks by "Constant Reader" on tho subject of sending books and magazines into tho country districts for lonely and out-of-the-way folk to read. I should like him and others to knowthat the Victoria League of Wellington has mado every effort possible to obtain the names and addresses of people to whom literature could be sent. We circularised the school tteachers in the backblocks, and wrote to many individuals whose names we could ascertain, and had absolutely no response. No . replies were sent at all, except in one instance, where a schoolmaster wrote to that they had an excellent library in their district, and therefore had no need for papers or magazines. After many inquiries wo found out the names of about four people, whoso friends thought they might like some literature, and only in one case was our parcel acknowledged. In each annual report of tho league's work, the remark has been made that our Literature Committee has had np work, not owing to lack of good magazines and papers if needed, but bscnusc wo could not hear of anyone who wanted them. Wo heard that, the residents on a distant islnnd would like books, so we packed off a box of books and a large parcel of papers, and cannot even find out if they were delivered. Just lately, by the courtesy of the manager of the IT.S.S. Company, wo have been able to send literature to tho Friendly Islands, where we know that it will bo appreciated. If "Constant Reader," or anyone el«e, would let m« have the names and addresses of peoplo who wish for magazines, etc., th» committee would be very pleased to collect and send them.—l am, , etc., M. H. OHATFIF.T/D, Hon. Secretary V.L., Wellington.
