MATRIMONY ADVERTISEMENTS

. AND THE SEQUEL. (By Tolceraph—Press Association.) . ■ Auckland, July 23. Tho casual variety of advertisement called "matrimonial" has idiosyncrasies which'set'it as a thing apart and _ it is considered passing strange, when tho matrimonial advertisement really wads to matrimony. However, a positive instance of such a thing having actually happened was recorded at tH© Polio© Court this morning, when a yourig man, who was staffed'to be a very decent lad' was charged with, having failed to provide his wife and 'child with adequate means of maintenance. The history of the case, as related by' Mr. Matthews, solicitor, was a rather pitiful one. Tho Society for the Protection of Women' and Children had' its attention drawn to destitution of a young woman and her child. They had been placed in a home while proceedings were being instituted to bring tho husband to book. .In"the interim, however, the conduct of the : niother satisfied the society that she waa not a fit and proper person to havo the custody of the child, and she did not seem at all inclined to stay under the restraint of the 'home. Consequently, a fuller statement of the circumstances of the marriage came but. Mr. Matthews did not press for an. order of maintenance against the husband for the mother, the child (though illegitimate. and not that of the defendant husband) would have to be provided for, and tho husband, since tho • marriage, was legally responsible. Mr'.' Staunton, who appeared for tho husband, stated in reply to a question by Mr. Cutten; S.M.. that the husband had cbmo to/know the girl through a matrimonial advertisement which lie had answered. She then had tho child, but ho was induced, in March last, to marry her. Sinco then her conduct had been unsatisfactory. !' 'It was agreed that. Mr, .Matthews should'.make an application to have the manager of the -"Some constituted the .childV guardian, and that he should also seek an order requiring the husband to contribute os. a week towards its maintenance. The young man agreed'to that course.
