ENGINE-DRIVERS' DISPUTE

In the engine-drivers' dispute the following agreement has been arrived at before tho Council of Conciliation:—Fortyeight hours per week; overtime at the rate of time and a quarter; time takeii in. getting up steam to be paid for at ordinary rates; work dono on Now Year's Day, Easter Monday, Labour Day, ' and tho King's Birthday to be paid for at tho rate of'time and a half; work done on Christmas Day, Good Friday ,_ and Sundays ■ to' be paid for at double time rates; in tho case of factories, the drivers of engines to be entitled to the holidays given by arty award or industrial agreomcnt affecting the factory, or ill cases where there is no award or industrial agreement affecting the same, to any holiday generally observed. in tho factory whereby the same ceases to work; for work done on sucli holidays tho rate of overtime to bo time and -a half. Morning and evening netfsimpers aro to bo exempted hom the holidays' clause, preference, and lindpr-rate workors' clanscs. Youth employed as firemen are to be paid the following rates:—lß and under 19 years of age, 7d. per hour; 19 and under 20 years of age. 9(1. per hour. Where the work that tho engine-driver is employed to do requires tluit lie shall hold a first-class certificate as .a stationary en-gine-driver, and he is tho holder of a first-class certificate, Is. 33d. per hour. Regarding tho other classes of enginedrivers, the' employers' assessors stated that tbey were not prepared to agree, to any advanco on th,e present award rates, and after considerable discussion the union's assessors agreed.
