v DONALDSON'S DOINGS. The Melbourne correspondent of the (Sydney "Referee" writes:—ln a letter, .doted June C, 'from Manchester, "Mick" Terry, trainer lof .Tack Donaldson, says:— "Jack arrived Su London a day after* mo, >nd we spent p. week sight-seeing. The weather, for once in a way, deligbtJul—quite waj->n. We are' now at Man-' E. Carter', who won /tho Stawell Gift last-Easter, landed here on Jung ■!. .He .intends to try hi- luck jin some of - the> big handicaps. "T.lw startjadjustors here are. however, very severo 'on newcomers, Thov think it 'wrongquite against the rules, in fact—for a stranger to. wiln until lie has been in the for srimc time. Carter will con-'eeq-iasntly have-, a bad mark to start, with, ©eing a young runner, with the pliivsique ?nd fjpcod to Jnake a champion, I think Carter is sure to do all right. Nat Cart-, inoll, I am informed by Charlie Holway will-not be visiting England this summer, 'fo one of our best matches, will not tako place. -Wo-willmeet. Oartmell on his own roil, for Jack and I intend crossing tJio Atlantic next September. Jack bos not liecn successful in , making any matches vet. AItXST AT WORK. Whilst tho English champion is holiday, fnakmg in Margate Dick Arnsfc continues ('sa/rlains fiflrd. in hi'a boat. At present
tho Now Zealonder has not indulged himself in a "let up" in his training, and, boyond a few afternoons oir, has been rowing twice daily almost since the dav ho started rowing hero (says an English exchange). , . In tho course of his two ou tongs each day Arnst generally covers tho full course, and rarely does .lie travel less thanl2 to U miles in his boat. This, combined with walking and running; has-enabled him to com©' down to his weight more rapidly . than is usual in tiris country. Indeed, wero hp other tihan a singularly poweriul man it would havo been a questionable .policy for him to have reduced himself i so quickly. Arnst, however, v:\ll not con-, tinuo' to 'work so hard, and .«oon, without giving up practice, will take matters fairly easily for a fortnight or a little l le??, after which ho will iinish his trainins with another spoil of good work. So far, Arnst ill as not been tested by the watch over tho full course. but .ho. lus been tried between the bridges, and according to his own account did a satisfactory time. As a matter of fact, ho is always rowing a fast paco, and on »ertnesday afternoon went at lus best pace from Barnes to Putney. Arnst, who is a believer in massage treatment after rowin?, is attended to'daily by. Oswald Stapyi'°lt lis understood that lord Desbo'roueh ivill bo invited to officiate as umpire for tho race, and it : is hoped that' if such is possible, a number of the lloyal .family may find it convenient to witness it. Low Desborough will be in Stockholm for fclio Olvmpio - Games, but as these conclude on July 22 lie may see his way to officiate in the racc, which takes place a week later.
