Thoso present were very enthusinstie, and all the speakers wore unanimous regarding a resolution to guarantee-funds for the engine-drivers until the termination, of the trouble. Since the- fund has Iroen. inaugurated, tho men out of work have each benefited to tho extent of £2 per week. The number now requiring relief is between thirty and forty. A PRISONER'S DEATH. ' Auckland, July 23. , A prisoner at Mt. Eden Gaol, named Andrew Hutchison, aged about 29 years, died in an ambulance while being conveyed to the Ibospital last night. He was in gaol awaiting sentence, at the next sitting of the Supremo Court on a charga . of forging and uttering valueless cheques. Ho had been suffering from Consumption for sonic time. As his cofjj|ion grew worse last night, it was deculed to send him to the hospital, but he died on the way. WANGANUI BRIDGE DEADLOCK. WanganuT, July 23. The Waneanui Borough Council to« night considered its solicitor's opinion in regard to the council's position over tho contract for tho new bridge. The contractor has abandoned tho work", as piles will not drive. The council decided to give the .contractor final notice to proceed with his contract. THE SLUMP IN TEACHING. Timaru, July 23. Tho Education Board to-day deplored the shortage of teachers, baring throetimes advertised for three assistantships in .. country schools. It was decided to advertise once more before appealing to the De- „ partment. One member suggested that ' there would bo plenty after the next holidays at tho Training Colleges. Another 6aid that in many oases pupil teachers wont to the college and no more was heard of them; ' '. AN AUCKLAND LOAN. Auckland, July 23. Tenders are being invited by the Auckland City Council Tor tho first instalment of .£25,000 of the streets improvement loan of .£225,000, authorised a year ago. Tho chairman of tho City Finance Committee. (Mr. A. J. Entrican) explained to-day that the condition of tho London money market is net at present favourable for the floating of a largo municipal loan, and it has therefore been deoided to raise .£25,000 in New Zealand to cover tho cost of paving four streets, with which the improvement scheme is being commenced. The contracts for this portion of tho scheuu amounts approximately to £13,000. HIS FOOTPRINTS. Wairoa, July 23. In connection with tho breaking ai\i entering of the store-room of the Wairoa Hotel on Friday last, Edwin James Har-. mer, whose wife keeps a boardinghouse, was yesterday charged with the offence, and with stealing bottles of various liquors. A pair of' boots thrown into tho river as tiro police- wero approaching, and fished out, together with plaster casts of footmarks, formed tho chief evi-' denco. Accused pleaded not guilty, and reserved his defence. Bail was allowed in the sum of :£3OO. P.S. COMMISSION. Chrlstchurch, July 23. Tho Public Service Commission conclude ed its Christchiurch sittings to-day, and leaves for Auckland to-night, sitting there on Thursday. It takes evidenco in Wellington on Monday. Tho commission has been granted, an extension of time to August 26. '. EGMONT HOSTELRY, New Plymouth, July 23. Mt. H. Bromley, of Rotorua, has been appointed manager of the new hostelry on the northern slopo of Mount Egmont. Tho houso is of concrete, and is now ]mt\g furnished. It is to bo fitted with electric. light, and will be ready for the reception of visitors on September 1. BRIEF MENTION. Gisboriie, July 23. Mr. C. D.
