LAWN TENNIS.
ALL-ENGLAND MIXED DOUBLES. Tlio chief event at the Juno Northern tennis meeting at Liverpool was tlio mixcil doubles, 'which carries with' it tlio championship title?. It always seems (says the "Westminster Gazelle") something of an anomaly that this honour should not bo associated with the mixed event at AVimbledon,' where, of course, tlio other championships are decided, and, in consequence, t|he entry is bound to be thoroughly representative, but _ for rjnio inexplicable reason this chanipionship has now for many years past been attached to the northern venue. Oil tlio present occasion .T. 0. -Parke and Mrs. Larcomlxs deserve congratulation on their jnicce?s in emerging triumphant over "a field wJrich included Doust and Mrs. Armstrong, Mr. and .Mrs. M'Nair, and Wallis Myers and Miss Tripp. In tlio challenge round tho> had ah interesting match with. Mavrogordato anil Mrs. Parion, the previous holders. Parke and Mrs. Larcombe took tlio initial sot in run-away ordlor by G games to 0. a.nd then got to 5—3 and vantage in tho second, but here the holders made determined fight, and ultimately annexed the set at S—o. However, this proved their last stand, as Parke and Mrs. Larccnibo gained tho final bout with comparative oaso. The Irishman has i previously won tho mixed champioiiMlrip with Mrs. Luard. In the East Surrey championships at East Croydon C. P. Dixon was oneo again tho dominating personality, but he had to work hard to defeat J. Zimmerman in the final round of tho Open Singles. In overcoming liitchie earlier in the week Zimmerman had shown his high quality, and against Dixon ho gave an excellent display, winning tho second set, and running tlio fourth to vantage games. Zim-iri-rman possesses an excellent American service, supplemented by a strong forehand drive, and when ho has learnt tho value of discretionary tactics in critical situations ho should prove absolutely firit class. This was Dixon's third successive victory in the East' Surrey championship, and accordingly the Challenge Clip' becomes his property. In partnership with Ritchie Dixon also won tho men's double event.
THE DAVIS CTJP. Negotiations in regard to ■ tlio playinfl of tho preliminary tio in t:lio Davis Cup match between' the British Isles and Franco are still in progress (says tlio "Westminster Gazette" of June 12), but it is announced that July 11, 12, and 13 lias been provisionally selected for the date of the contest, tlie-.vouue of which is not yet decided, Tlibugh tlio British representatives in the Singles have not beeh chosen, Messrs. C. I'. Dixon and lioper Barrett liavo b?on invited by the Lawn Tennis Association to play together in the doubles. This selection would teem to be an exceedingly happy oils, and gives pronnso of tlio best combination. . Mr. Dixon's fine American service and powerful forehand drivo. should aflord great ecop© to Mr. Barrett's almost uiictrniiv capacilv Of anticipation cmd close volleying at tlio net. As a pair ono expects them to do credit to English lawn tennis.. '
