SHOCKING DEATH.
TRAGEDY IN A BOILER SHOP. (By Tcloeraph.—Prese Association.) Christchurch, July 20. A shocking fatality occurred in tho boiler shop of the Lyttcltoa foundry of Messrs. Anderson, Ltd., about ten o'clock this morning, a'niacumist naliicd Charles Muscnahip being caught in tho main shatung, whirled round, and killed instantaueously. At tho time of tho occurrence Muschamp was engaged in mending a broken bolt which had been running on a pulley on tho main shaft. After putting tho fastenings on tho broken ends of tho belt ho mounted a ladder which was resting on a bracket below the 6hai't, and pushed ono end of tho belt over, and tho other under tho shaft, which was revolving between his arms. There was only ono actual eye-witness of the accident, a youth named Sydney James, who was standing closo to the ladder. He stated that the whole thing happened in nn instant, and that while Muscharop was reaching over the shaft about twelvo feet above tho ground, part of his clothing became entangled with a clip on tho shaft, which was running at 108 revolutions per minute. Either his sleeve or the loose part of his coat was caught, and Muschamp was torn from the ladder, and carried over tho shaft, and whirled round several times. James and several other horrified men rushed to tho ongine-roora, and the engines wero stopjied nt once, and Muschamp was taken down.' Death must have been instantaneous, for it is thought that tho head struck a piece of angle iron just abovo the shaft. There were other very severe injuries also. Deceased was a married man, and leaves a widow and two young children, residing at John Street, Sydenham. He was about 35 vears of age, and had been employed by Messrs. Anderson, Limited, for about 17 years. During the last eight years lie iiad been engaged as machinist at the firm's Lyttcltou shops. At tho inquest Frederick Wm. Anderson, LyttcltcHi director of Andersons, Ltd., stated 'that deceased was a careful, steady, efficient, and industrious man, and was nn expert man on belting. He had done similar work thousands of times. After hearing tho evidence, (he coroner recorded a verdict of "Accidentally killed."
