TREE-PLANTING.
THE MAYOR AT WORK. Tho weather which, marred Arbor Day operations on Wednesday last was not at all propitious for tree-planting cm Saturday afternoon, owing to tho bitterly cold weather, and the swampy state of tho soil in tho various reserves. Still, faithful.to his appointment, the Mayor, accompanied by Mrs. M'Laren, proceeded to the reservo (Section 18) near tho Victoria Collego, where he was met by the City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton), tho town clerk (Mr. J. E. Palmer), Councillor Smith, and about twenty citizens, and with the assistance of several members of tho Reserves staff, set to work without speech or ceremony to plant trees, thoso planted were mostly birch and pittosporum gnssihliuin, both of which grow quickly onco they get a start. About a hundred trees were planted on the reserve during tho afternoon.
