THE LATE MAJOR MAIR.
EXPRESSIONS OP SYMPATHY. The remains of the late Major W. G. Mair, who died at Waiotapu on Monday last, were interred at Whangarei beside those of ])is parents on Thursday. Many messages of condolence nave been received by the relatives of the late Major Mair, including the following i eloquent and characteristic tribute from the Ngatikahungunu tribe of Maoris at Hastings:— . . '. . ■ '■ . ; To Captain Mair.—Salutations. We have this day received the sorrowful tidings of yourreveTed elder brother's death. Therefore theloveandaifection.rises within our hearts for him who was ever the honoured and steadfast friend of all out great chiefs who have passed away before him to that bourne'which, has been appointed by tho Most High for us all. We shall go to him, but he will not return, to us. .. ■. ■ "Friend Tawa (Captain Mair), our tears are falling for your elder brother. He had reached life's allotted, span. The day fixed by God for him' to'pass hence had arrived,- and we, who are left behind, await our appointee!" time. Offer our loving sympathy to hie widow arid his children.". ■ ■ .'' '' , .. The letter was signed Mohi Tβ Atahikoia—on behalf of tho tribe! Judge Bawson, of the' Native Land Courf,.writing.from Gisbome, eaid: "Our Appellate Court adjourned out of respect to the' lato Major Mair. The Ngatiporou requested the Court to convey to his relations tho great sorrow-felt by them at -the loss of an old, tried,. true, and faithful friend of the Maori race. The Chief Judge and myself ' also desire to express our sympathy."
