PERFORMING MUSICIANS.

CASE BEFORE CONCILIATION COUNCIL. (By Talierash.—Fms> \«goc!at!an.l Auckland, July 9. The recently-formed Auckland Performing Musicians' Union did not lose any time in bringing a caso before t.lio Conciliation Council. Tho matter camo on this morning, Mr. T. Harle Giles, Commissioner, presiding. For the union the assessors were Messrs. Louis Blitz, R. A. Denny, and J. R. Morley, and for the employers' Messrs. John Fuller, jun., Bert Royle, and Fred Duncan appeared. Fiftysix employers were cited, among the name 3 being thoso of various 1 theatrical and picture entertainments, tho racing clubs, tho rinks, a number of proprietors of orchestras, some hotels and toa rooms, tho operatic, choral, and orchestral societies, etc. Mr. Hartland asked for exemption on behalf of tho Auckland Racing Club. The club only engaged brass bands, and at present brass bauds have not joined th<j union. Tho club, he said, had no' desire, to nay loss than recognised but wisnod to be free. The Commissioner reserved the point. Mr. Plummer, for the Auckland Choral Society, and Mr. Prime, for the Orchestral Socioty, asked for exemption. Tho former said the fees Asked for by tho union would mean cutting out ills society altogether. Tho society was. a purely amateur body. Mr. Blitz said tho union had v no objection to t'ho societies being struck out. The Commissioner expressed pleasure at tho exemption of these bodies, which did. such a lot for tho cause of musio in Auckland. Tho names of both societies wore struck out.

Tho Commissioner asked if there were no applications from the Operatio Society. Mr. John Fuller, son., mentioned that at tho, meeting which was held a few (lavs o t ~a the opinion seemed to be tlint thero S 01 »d I> B objection to exemption of that body. Perhaps tho society took that' as final and did not think it was necessary to appear. Tho Commissioner said thoy might hear later. Tho council then went into ccmmitteo to discuss details of the union's application. lho union is asking for tho legulation of hours, conditions, ote.. and tho wages are fixed at per week and 10s. for each malineo performance.
