UNDER LIBERALISM.
BUSINESS IN "BATCHES." (Br Telegraph.—Press Association.) ' Pahlatua, July 9. A peculiar position has arisen regarding the seat of Mr., J. I. Fox on the Pahiatua Borough Council. In May last, when the vacancy occurred, Mr. Fox was elected unopposed, but <it appears that he was not then a British subject, and has only been granted Icttei-3 of naturalisation since. The validity of his election has now been challenged. Mr. Fox, when questioned on the subject, explained that, prior to his nomination for the seat, lie had taken the oatli of allegiance and had applied' for letters of naturalisation. He hod believed that everything was in 1 order, and that ho could sit on, tho council. Ho explained that there had been some delay in reooiving tho papers, and when, subsequently, ho inquired at the offioe ,of the Minister for Internal Affairs lie was informed that they were waiting till they signed a batch of naturalisation papers. As an objection had been j raised lie thought that tho proper courso was for him to retiro from tho council. Mr. Fox is now .taking legal advice.
