ANGLICAN SYNOD.

MASTERTON CHURCH AFFAIRS,

On behalf of the Diocesan Board of Trustees Archdeacon Fancourt moved: "That the resolution of Synod of October 12, ISOS, setting aside the' rental of part of the Mastcrton Church Acre 'as partial endowment for a curate's stipend lor the | Piinsii ot Mastcrton' be rescinded hereby, in order that this rental may be added to the other rentals derived from tho acres as security for the loan for building the new church." The mover said that thi! proposal had the entire approval of the trustees. The present circumstances and general outlook of the Mastertou parish were now very different to those which obtained when the original resolution was passed in IS9B. The outlook now was most encouraging, and there was no doubt that the parish would shortly l» able to afford (he services of a curate. The proposed change was :i necessary one, as sufficient security was required for the debentures to Ijc issued in urder to secure the balance of funds for the new church. Masterlion had made a great eilort, and deserved the recognition of the Synod. As a rider to the above, motion, he also proposed to move: "That in the matter of the Master-ton Church district (assistant curate's stipend fund) the accumulated rents be used towards the assistant curate's stipend, at tho discretion of .the diocesan trustees, to the extent of JiSO or J!90." The accumulations now totalled .£SOO, as the result of there having been no appointment to the position of assistant curate. The T?cv. A-. M. Johnson seconded the motion, and congratulated the mover on the happy relations which had now been established between the diocesan trustees and the vestry at Masterton. Mr. Henderson said Hlat ho was glad to observe the end ofc?o wrangle _ which had been going on between the diocesan trustees and the vestry at Mastcrton from tho time when the . Church Acre was bought for 255. down to tho occasion ot the Archdeacon's speech to. the motion which 1 ' was now "before the Synod. (Laughter.) Mr. G. Shirtcliffe doubted whether the limitation of lime, which he understood was proposed for the security, would ba sufficient security to the debenture-hold-ers.

Archdeacon Fancourt said that the limitation of time proposed, about twenty years, had been accepted as a basis of the'security. That point had ten satisfactorily settled.

Archdeacon Harper drew the attention of the Synod to the fnct that, a church could not ho, consecrated till it was free of debt. Could a church built from money raised on debentures he considered to be free, of debt? Archdeacon laneourt pointed out that Hie question raised by the previous speaker could be settled at the discretion of the Bishop.. He recalled the fact that St. Peter's Church was consecrated when it was under a linancial obligation of several thousands. This oblig.i'-ion was taken over by the people themselves, and the Church was then consecrated by Bishop lladfield, ivho evidently regarded the church as being debt-free. The motion was carried, and tho supplementary motion was also adopted without discussion.

Archdeacon Fancourt moved: "That this Synod recommends the General Synod to grant permission to the Diocesan Board of Trustees to exchange hvo acres at Kuripuni, less the area taken for widening rho road, for the parcel of land bought by the.Parish of St. Matthew, Masterton, for a church site." Tho mover said that tho land in question was really tho property of the parish, and held by the Diocesan Trustees as security. The motion was carried. On the motion of Archdeacon Fancourt, it was resolved: "That tho Synod do recommend tho General Synod to allow tho side of two sites at Otaki, namely, Lot 79, lladfield Township, and part of Maitikuru Block, the proceeds to bo used towards tho purchase of a, central site for a .church and other buildings." The mover explained that tho population of tho Otaki township had moved away from tho site at present occupied by the churchroom. The sections, also, wei'e unsuitable • fqr church j purposes. A section cempris-. ing- 1J acres had bora secured in a central position. ...... The motion' was carried,. '' \ Tho Synod then adjourned till this a'fternoou.
