THE SALVATION ARMY.

COMMISSIONER ANB MES. RICHARDS IN THE OPERA HOUSE.

In connection with the welcome meetings to Commissioner and Mrs. Richards, tho new leaders of the Salvation Army in the Dominion, three, lnrge and enthusiastic "gatherings were held in the Opera House yesterday, in spito of the boisterous and wintry weather.

In the morning service the Commissioner delivered a practical and forceful address, particularly suited to tho Christian section of the highly-interested audience. Mrs. Richards, who is a most winsome speaker, also addressed tho congregation. '

From various open-air stands, large bodies of Salvationists, headed by a brass band, paraded the main thoroughfares, attracting a considerable crowd of the general public, who filled the body and dress circle of the building in the afternoon. A characteristic Salvation Army service was conducted indoors. Again Commissioner Richards, with an arresting address, held the attention of the audience. :

'■ At night the building held a larger crowd.. than ever, the keenest interest being taken by Hie audience in the proceedings. Prior to (he service the Wellington City Band played several stirring selections. The opening services were conducted by Lieutenant-Colonel Fisher, who was assisted by a number of the headquarters staff. Mrs. Richards feelingly spoke on tlio" responsibilities of parenthood. The Commissioner, in a. stirring address, relieved throughout with appropriate illustrations, hold the attention of tho congregation for some length. Tho speaker was listened- to with rapt attention. Quite a number of men and women entered tho inquiry-room at the conclusion of the services.

Commissioner and Mrs. Eichards, with several members of their staff, will leave for the south on Wednesday evening next, to conduct meetings throughout the South Island.
