A PRISON HERO.
c SAVES THE LIFE OF A WARDER. By Telegraph—Press Association—OoDyriehV London,. June 12. William Ward, who was arrested in West Australia in February last on a charge of murdering Ernest Nixey Smith at Chiswick in 1908, was found guilty of manslaughter, and sentenced to nine months' imprisonment. While in Brixton prison Ward saved tho life of a warder whom another prisoner had attacked. Ward was found guiity of killing Mr. Smith at Chiswick on October 28, 1908. The two men were seen talking heatedly in the street, and shortly afterwards Mr. Smith was found lying unconscious, with a deep wound in his temple, afterwards alleged to have been caused by the ferrulo of Ward's umbrella. Ward, meanwhile, had disappeared, and was only arrested at Perth in February last, on a warrant charging him with wilful murder,
