SIR JOSEPH WARD.
ASKED TO ENTER AUSTRALIAN POLITICS. Bj , Telegraph—Press Assoclation-Coprrlght Sydney, May 27. The "Sydney Morning Herald" states that Sir Joseph Ward was sounded by Sydney and Melbourne friends as (o whether, if a seat were found for him, ho would contest it at Iho next Federal election on the Liberal side. Ho was assured that the contest would not entail any pecuniary sacrifice. The representations, however, wero not mado on behalf of the Liberal party or its organisations. Sir Joseph Ward did not reply absolutely in the negative, but indicated the possibility that ho would consent in certain events, if assured that the desire was not limited to any one section. (Rec. May 2", 11 p.m.) Melbourne, May 27. The Federal Prime Minister, Mr. Fisher has declined to comment on the statement that Sir Joseph Ward had been urged to enter Federal politics. ' In view of the above, it is interesting to note that before a British subject is eligible to sit in the Federal Parliament be must have resided in Australia for a period of, throe years.'; Should Sir . r oseph Ward elect to stand for a State Parliament, he would, in the eas-e of New South AVales, have to reside in Australia continuously for 'one. year, and during six months of that i>eriod liavo had his i.rincipal place of abode In New Saudi Wales; If he stood for the Victorian Parliament, two years' lesidence within that State would be necessary.
