POLITICS AND POTATOES.
THE SUPPOSED "POWER BEHIND THE THRONE." Tho Prime Minister (Hon. T. Mackenzie,) was questioned yesterday ill regard to tho-statement attributed, to.Sir Jcsciih Wnrd in Sydney to the effect that he might return to the Premiership of Now Zealand, Mr. Mackenzie said:—'l think the press has got the wrong hang of what Sir Joseph Ward said, or at any rate the spirit of it. I might add, apropos cf the suggestion that, has been made that Sir Joseph Ward is 'the power behind the throne,' it is now two months since I was entrusted with tho control of the affairs of this country, and with the exception of one letter from him, which was not advisory, and one irom me to him yesterday, asking him to use his good offices in Australia for the .admission of our potatoes under, conditions which, whilo safeguarding the people there from any fear of ciisoaso from that source, will help our agriculturists to plac« large quantities of tlieir splendid crop this voir in tho Commonwealth, I have had *110 communication from 18m. I mil pleased to bo able to add that we arc getting alone splendidly in the country, as the public could easily discover were they able to learn how things are faring with us,"
