BOXING ITEMS.
The following boxing items are from the Sydney "Referee":—
From Milwaukee (U.S.A.), the home city of Mr. M'lntosh's American representative, the cable flashed last week:—
"Johnson refuses to accept an offer of .£6OOO to meet Lanefbrd in Australia under the management of Mr. Hugh M'lntosh. Johnson reiterates his intention bo retire from the ring after September." "Alf." Bromwich, who says that he is light-weight champion of New Zealand through "Tim" Tracey's retirement, is in Sydney, and is a.nxious to meet anv tenstoner, bar Mehegan. "Tommy" has been specially named, and £2 lodged with me to bind a. match for JSIOO aside. Failing O'Brien, Hannan will bo accommodated.
"Sid" Sullivan gave away a half-stone in weight and some advantage in height and reach to Arthur Douglas at Brisbane on May 6, and won from end to end of twenty stremions rounds. Douglas was under bond to weigh not more than 9st. 71b., which was probably under his best; but Sullivan's performance was, nevertheless, brilliant. In the earlier rounds ho did effective work with that left swing, which so nearly settled Elliott recently. Douglas depended all through on a long-range right, which Sullivan evaded by stenping in and.rattling away with both hands.
