OIL LOCOMOTIVES.
FORESIGHT OP THE GREAT EASTERN. The Great Eastern Railway (says the London'''Daily Mail") has eighty locomotives th'at can Be run'with oil'fuel. These are express'passenger engines designed twenty-five years ago -by Mr. Holden, ..father of the present locomotive .superintendent;-- The oil'fuel fs used in conjunction vrith coal, a layer of red-hot coal always lying at the bottom of the fire-box, over which the oil is driven through a nozzle; The oil.then readily ignites. The engines.- use ..about hal£ us., much conl as en ordinary coal-burning locomotive over the same distance.' They are convertible from one form to t.ho other in two or three hours. • "„'.,. At present only two of the eighty aro being driven by oil fuel. The reason for this is that the oil fuel is now more expensive than coal. Various kinds cf oil have been experimented with, and of late years that used most successfully, has been an oil derived from the waste tar from gasworks. Its prico has increased so rapidly, howover, owing to its uso ] in road-making, that tho company .found it did not pay them to givo the prices paid by road-making firms. Should the price of oil RO down or tho price of coal nso obove that of oil, the locomotive superintendent, would be prepared to "convert all the engines,,into the form capable ,of burning oil fuel. ...... ... ■ .
