THE ORPHANS' CLUB
OPENING.OF THE SEASON. The Wellington Orphans' Club, a popular social body which helps to make th.e burden of lile a little lighter, opened its season at the Masonic Hall on .Saturday evening. Tho hall was packed with Orphans and their friends, who included Mr Justice Denniston and the Hon. A. Mvers' The Most Orphan (Colonel R. J. Coflinsj was installed into office with much pomp and circumstance, tho ceremony being enlivened with an original song and chorus written specially for tho occasion by Orphan Gawthorpc, who gave freo reign to a, lively imagination. The programme was an excellent one. An orchestra of about 25 performers under Orphan W. M'Loughlin, played a couple of selections in good style, and received ovations on each Decision. Herr Adolf Zeness, violinist, contributed a solo, and Orphan Connors made music skilfully on a banjo. Mr. Meyer (of Sydney) sang tunefully, and Mr. Newman, a casual Orphan from London, proved himself to be a comic songster with a magnetic style. Orphan Zante Wood waved tho banner of higher socialism in a recitation, and Orphan Charles Read sang in good taste "I Hear You Calling Me." Orphan Newman (of Dunediu) gossiped humorouslv for a few bright minutes, and Mr. Allright (of Chvistchurch), Mr. Mohr .(of Melbourne), contributed acceptably to the harmony of tho evoning. The accompaniments were, played by Orphans M'Loughlin, H. Peterson, and H. Blick. Judging by its initial gathering of 1912, tho Orphans' lot is distinctly a hajjDr one.
