(By Telegraph—Special Correspondent,) Blenheim, May 2. Tho weather was again perfect, and the rain, which tell over-night., had taken tho sting out of the ground. The big handicap went to the locally-owned Sea Queen, who won cleverly after ono of the finest races ever seen on tho course. Tho riding of Deeley was again a feature of the mcteing, tho Auckland horseman steering six winners. The three Scurry horses were regarded as fairly even, and a good betting raco was the result. The first day's form pointed to Excitement, but ho did not look right, and appeared jaded. Indra, on tho o!.her hand, was full oi' life, and Ruination, who made up tho trio, was only half ready. Excitement jumped off with tho lead, followed by Kuination and Indra. Tho last-named got up on tho inside of Kuination, and had collared Excitcmeut at tho turn into the straight. She then ran on, and won very comfortably. Ruination, after hanging out badly, finished well, and boat Excitement for second money. Though there wore only three starters in the Telegraph Handicap, they gave tho starter a lot of trouble, and, eventually, as a means of quietening Glenspring, Mr. O'Connor decided upon a walk-up start. Blno Lako beat Glenspring off the mark, and the chestnut was then not seen at his best, and appeared not to relish ljeing in behind. Tho llutt filly was always going .strongly in front, and won-by several lengths: Beacon was only a head away from Glenspring. Toney was again a hot favourite in tho Hack Welter Handicap, but Aloha, who looked a bettor marc to-day, beat him comfortably, after appearing to be hopelessly beaten. t'oreshot and Stockade niiido tho pace very solid for the first lialf-mile, when Stockade retired, and Mediterranean took his place. The two favourites were at the rear as i'nc straight was entered, but then both moved up. A good finish saw Aloha just get Foreshot, but Tonov could only run third, l'oroshot was tiie outsider of tho field, and had lie won the dividend would have been a. very large one. The President's Handicap was tho most exciting race of tho meeting, the field being bunched the whole way. Sea Queen got the best of a good start, and_ led from a bunched field out of the straight. Making the top bend there was a lot m chopping and changing, and the field strung out, but. at tho six furlongs, they were again bunched, and the positions were practically unchanged till the quarter-mile post. Hero Odessa was m chargc, but Sea Queen and Tjudecidec, ran up to him. Sinapis and Waipunm were also prominent, but soon dropped back, aud a great struggle took niace between the three placed horses. Sea Queen got the last run in, and won by half a lengtli, a simiiar distance separating, tho oJier
pair. . The five-furlongs liack race again weni. to C. PVitchard's stable, but., this lime, the least, favoured of the pair tat tiie favourite, fiav Lawless was again unruly at the barrier, and got awav badly, but she got a clear run up on Hie fence, and, at (he distance, had caught Mount Victoria. The otiort. was too much, and the latter, finishing I he stronger, beat her by a lemth. Al urement came very fast al Iho finish, and got third, just clear of San Port. Katua got awav badlv, and was in the rear throughout. Excitement was saddled up tho second time, and was ?*itnuiittou to miction after Hie race, but do bids were received. ■ , There were ten runners m tho open welter, Ballv Shannon being made favourite. Dcelev fairly excelled himseif in this race, and, after a sensational finish, he got tho favourite up in tiaie to win by a head. Parawanui took charge goim? down the back, and lie entered tho straight with a' long lead from Merry Frank and Bally Shannon. The lastnamed soon cut down Merry Frank, but the gap between lie and l'arewaiiui was still a lengthy one as the filial hundred van's were enlered -unon. Dcelev iiion look the stick out. and, in a vigorous fin-" ish. he got up in time lo win bv a head ill the last stride. The public loudlv rliecrrd the winner as he returned to th" bird^ag", Leapuki won the Filial Hamhcap, after j
a good set-to. Toney was favourite, but he col liadlv awav, and tho effort to reach the leaders tonic a lot out of him. Allurement was second, this making the flflh time on which she has finished 'iu this position. Dirge iiai.-dicd well, but was very sore, ami could not begin with the other horse?. HAWKE'S BAY J.C. MEETING. SECOND DAY'S liACES. IBjr Tclccraph—l'rCfiH Association! Hastings, May 2. iieautifiil weather favoured the second day of Ihc Hawke's l!ay Jockey Club's Autumn meeting. Tho attendance was wi'll up (o the average, and his Excellency tho (.Juvenmr was present as the guest of the president, Mr. G. P. Donnelly, liain fell during tho night, but not suflicientlv to alloc!; tho racing. Tho totalisator investments wero Ji11),309, as against .£10,71] fo.' the second day of the last Autumn meeting.
