ATHLETICS.
OLYMPIC GAMES PREPARATIONS. Great Britain. has been dower in ltwfc tag at tho outset in unking its preparations for the coming OJympic Games at Stockholm next June than ether countries (says a writer in the Loudon '•Standard"). Those .preparations are wc-ll oa tho way . now, and a great ileal of keenness is ' being shown, both by officials and athletes. There is no Government grant, as in some other countries, to aid the men in their training operations and to cover tho expense ot sending out tho best passible team, nn<l tho available funds in the British Olympio Association arc a long way short ot what other nations would deem adequate, but ( so far as means will permit nil possible steps avo being taken to encourage eandi>. dates for places in the team in their s>ro> lijniuary training and to seek out tho fx* I. obtainable material. These preliminarj arrangements are in the efficient hand« of Mr. J\ W. Parker, secretary of th* London Athletic Club, who is visitiag tlw chief athletic centres with an observant and trained c.vo for likely men. awl is giving valuable advice to the athletes and those concerned iu the loeal organisation of the training. There is to be a great gathering in London in May of the selected .candidates from tho different centres, who will be submitted to a series of tests. Altogether, while it will be impossible for us to send out all our absolutely best men, it is already felt that the Old Couutry will bo by no means unworthily represented. Wo can have but little ljopn of fnccoss in what are denominated, "field events"—discus and hammer throwing, putting the weight, the iumiis, etc—which have not been very highly cultivated over here in'recent years, but a little mow attention lias been given recently to thoeo events, thanks to the work of a special association formed for the purpow. and v.'G shall, at all events, show some iiu» provrsiiK'ut. I have already briefly te th« great match at Inverleith < last Sntuisfir.y between England and Scotland, and, del space permit, there is a great deal nuyo that I could say about that oxtraordmniy g-.ime, which resulted in a way different from that, in which SB out of every 10!> fo'lowers of Rugby football expected it to end. England had beaten Wales and Inland with case, and without having i< point scored against her; Scotland, on th« other hand, lip.cl been beaten by both Wales and Ireland. 3o Iwt one result could bo looked for. The Scottish forwards, however, had a very favournbta impression on the minds of' tho cognoscenti, and it was felt, (hat if a sound set of backs could be foum! Micro might not be such an easy victory for England after oil. Two men new to international games were brought into the back department— W. Burnett, of Ffftwiek, at centre threeo(iart«r, and J, L. BoVtl, of the United Service?, at outside half: but both Utess mett were fairly well known, and she English officials and players had aot much to fear of (lie result. What is now 'hi'Mory. Nojhiiv: was scored in tho first lialf, whilst in the '.roond Scotland scored t*cvi tries, innvorting cue, and Enjland scored but ens try.
