Tho Prime Minister was present, and was well received. lie was accompanied by Mr. Jiuxton. Tho proceedings were very enthusiastic. Mr. Duncan had represented tho district for about thirty years, and tho purso presented to him was a heavy one. Tho Prime Sinister in his address referred to tho political situation, and said if tho Government were defeated when tho llouso met they would rot be afraid to iaco tho country, and would strive for a dissolution. NEW UNITARIAN CHURCH. Timaru, May 2. The Unitarian body this afternoon opened a commodious building to serve n-s n church, social hall, and Sunday school for the congregation, of which tho Rev. J. F. C. Chappie is minister. Visiting ministers from Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin were present. Tho site and building cost .£2-400, half of which was generously provided by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wells. WHY MR. ANSTEY STAYED AT HOME. Timaru, May 2. The Hon. J. Anstey, M.L.C., was to have been present at the opening of tho new Unitarian church, here to-day, but wrote that the Defence Department had taken away his men in tho middle of threshing to attend the Territorial camp, and ho could not leave his farm.
WHOLESALE THEFT CASES. Greymouth, May. 2. The. wholesale theft cases concluded this morning. Tho three accused were committed to the Christchurch Supreme Court for' sentence on May 13 on indietabio charges. Bail was refused. On the summary charges (he magistrate sentenced Alfred Robinson to two months' imprisonment, and Oliver Robinson and Edward Rawson to ono month's . imprisonment caeh, the sentences to be concurrent, APPLES FOR ARGENTINA. Auckland May 2. The. Waitsmatu Fruitgrowers' Association ships on May 18 to tho Argentine one thousand cases of apples, picked and graded by tho Government supervisors. They are dessert apples of good quality. If successful, further and larger shipments will bo made. TAILOR BURNT OUT. Reofton, May 2. Mr. Tapp's tailor shop was gutted by fira Inst night. The stock, fittings,' and made suits were destroyed. The premises of Mr. Pedrazzi, a dentist, next door, suffered. Tho insurances are:—On the building: T. .T. Malioy (owner), -C3ofl in the Phoenix office; on the stock, JC22O in tho London and Lancashire office. SPIRITS STORE ON FIRE. Christchurch, May 1. A fire, in Messrs. F. Cross and Son's spirit store at -4.10 o'clock this morning was checked by the brigade just in tinio to prevent a disastrous conflagration. There wore one hundred casks of whisky stored in tho building, and it required smart work on the brigade's part to prevent tlio fire reaching them. Tho damage was confined to the office ami contents. The building was owned by Mrs. A. J. White's estate, and is insured Tor ,£IBOO in the Victoria office. The contents are insured for JE'-iOOO in tho New Zealand office. 43 CHARGES OF THEFT. Greymouth, May I.' The further hearing of forty-three charges of theft, of machinery, tools, etc., from various persons, against Alfred and Oliver Robinson and Edward Watson, is proceeding. ■ "Accused have pleaded guilty'in most instances having made statements to Inspector Norwood admitting tho offences, 'which enabled the police to recover many of tho stolen articles. The total vi>hie of the goods stolen is estimated at over .£209. SHOT THROUGH THE HEART. Dunedin, May 1. Sydney Charles Rees, forty years of age, n married man, living in Church Street, North-East Valley, committed suicide in n store adjoining his residence yesterday afternoon.' His daughter states that ha had been acting strangely of late. He left her for a minuto yesterday, and almost at onco she heard a gunshot, end found him shot through the heart.WHAT BURNT THE STORE? ... Christchurch, May 1. An inquiry was opened at Kaiapoi yesterday concerning tho firo which destroyed Lloyd's store and two other buildings at Woodcnd on March 2G. Evidence was given that Lloyd bought flic stock for ■£136 Gs. at the end of January. He had paid only .M 0 on the stock, had insured it for i'3so, and claimed for ,S2o!i. Tho inquiry was adjourned till Saturday.
CONGESTED TRAFFIC. Auckland, May 1. Mr. Parr, in a speech at his installation as Mayor, outlined an important scheme for relieving tramway and vehicle traftic in Queen Street by diverting tho traffic, from the eastern side of Queen Street to a new circular route. A SHOT AT THE SAFE. . Auckland, May 1. Burglars entered tho premises of Messrs. Languth and Co., and Messrs. Bond and Bel! on Monday night. At Languth's an unsuccessful attempt was made ( to burst an iron safe with gelignite. In neither caso was anything of great valuo taken. IRON WORKS BURNT OUT. New Plymouth, May 1. A fire occurred at the Parapara Iron Company's new works at Moturoa about 2 o'clock this morning. The main building was destroyed, but the gas-producing plant was not much damaged. The origin of the fire is unknown. The insurances are not known locally. "SQUARING UP" PRIVATE SCHOOLS. Auckland, May 1. The Board of Education has resolved to insist upon the private schools conforming to the regulation making the regular attendance of children on the roll compulsorv, and requiring school managers to supply monthly certificates of attendance. The board is instructing its truant officer to take action when the law is not complied with. DVVELLINGHOUSE BURNED. Auckland, Mav. 1. A house in Newmarket, owned by Sir. R. M'Clure was burned to the ground tonight The occupants wero away at a picture show, and nothing Was saved. Tho insurances, which are not available, do not nearly cover the extent of the damage. During tho fire one of the brigade was overcome by smoke, but fecovered conseiousnss on rcst'oratives being applied.
