Christcliurch, • «y '2 Although pessimism is the prevailing note of referenea to the dredge Manchester in shipping circles at Lyttolton, it is suggested that she may have been' compelled to heave-to during the recent gales, and may have drifted far out of her course. Captain Downie was for some years an officer on Union Company steamers before joining the shore stall'. Mrs. Downie lives at Lyttelton. Mr. Baxter, tho second mate, is a native of Aberdeen. He came out with the Manchester from Renfrew. Mr. Ayres, the second engineer, is a native of Christcliurch. Mr. Crombie, third engineer, carae to Lyttelton with the Jredgc. He served his apprenticeship with the builders of the dredge at Renfrew. M'Queen is a native of Wick; Rogers, another Scotchman, also'came out with the dredge, and Gilray belongs to Lyttelton.
