OBITUARY.
A WANGANUI PIONEER. Mr. William Brewer, of Waihau, one of the best-known and best-liked pioneer settlers of the W-angamii district, passed away at Belvedere private hospital on Sunday morning. For some timo past (says the Wanganui "Chronicle") Mr. Brewer had been in indifferent health, and, although ho rallied a few days ago and was able to return home, he "gradually grew worse, and had to return to tho hospital on Friday. He never rallied again, and passed away peacefully. Mr, Brewer had been identified with the progress of the coast for the best part of half a century and experienced the vicissitudes common to all early settlers,. Eventually he settled down at Waihau, and for tho past thirty years Mr. and Mrs. Brewer have dispensed the _ most generous and open-handed hospitality; so much so thai Waihau and hospitality are looked upon as synonymous. The'late Mr. Brewer was of tho kindliest nature and generous to a fault, and withal a man of tlio highest integrity, and a sport to tho core., He was a prominent member of the Eg-mont-Wangamii Hunt Club, and the Waihau meet was always one of the most popular of the season. Mr. Brewer married a daughter of the late Major Duric, who survives him, and he leaves a family of three sons—Mr. Sam Brewer, of Stratford; Mr. Bob Brewer, of Hawcra; and Mr. Herbert Brewer, of Waitotara—and three daughters—Mrs. Alf. Symes, of Wavcrley; Mrs. Dr. Simmons, of Patea; and Miss Maud Brewer, of Waihau.
