CIVIC ELECTION.

ME. TREGEAR FOR LABOUR. Tlio election, to fill the vacancy on tho City Council, created by tho election of Mr. D. M'Larcn as Mayor, will take place on Friday, May 17. Nominations will close on Friday, May 10. A combined meeting of tho Wellington branches of the Labour party was held at the Trades Hall last evening, for the purpose of selecting a candidate. Mr. D. M'Larcn presided over a meeting of about 200 members of the party. There were a number of nominations, and tho choice of tho party eventually fell on Mr. E. Tregear, late Secretary for Labour. Prominent members of the Labour party who were spoken to last evening declared themselves confident that .Air. Tregear would secure the hearty and undivided sunnort of Labour voters.

The only other candidate who linsi definitely announced himself is Mr. W. J. Thompson. Mr. M. Murdoch, an cx-mom-ber of the.council, is a possible candidate, but has not vet come to a decision.

Labour parly workers, who are engaged in inducing electors to enrol, state that they have hopes, of adding 1000 names to the' supplementary roll now in process of compilation. So far very few claims for enrolment have been received by the City Returning Officer (Mr. .Tas. Ames), and no candidates have as yet been nominated.
