MR. O'BRIEN'S DEPARTURE.
HIS RESIGNATION RECEIVED. The Town Clerk yesterday received a letter from Mr. W. S. O'Brien, tendering his resignation as Superintendent of tho City Eire Brigade. 'J.V letter itself was not made available, and no official explanation was offered of Mr. O'Brien's sudden departure on Friday last. It is reported that Mr. O'Brien left by tho Aorangi for San Francisco on Eriday. Ue was seen aboard that vessel a quarter of nn hour before she sailed.
Tho Eire Brigade Committee of tho City Council met yesterday afternoon, but did not deal with the matter of Mr. O'Brien's departure or the necessity of appointing <i successor. Tho wholo question was _ referral to the council, which will consider it on Wednesday evening next. The Acting-Mayor (Councillor J. Smiths when he was spoken to on the subject vestonhv, said that he had nothing to' sav about Mr. O'Brien's departure, save that the brigado was nil right. Tho position vacated had been temporarily filled, and the council would deal with tho matter in ordinary course.
