LIQUOR TRADE REGULATION.

PROHIBITIONISTS AND BISHOP.

With reference to the recent statements on tho temperance question by tho Anglican Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Crossley), the following resolution was passed by tho Auckland Prohibition I.eaguo at its meeting on Tuesday night, and a copy was forwarded (o the Bishop.— "The Auckland City Prohibition and Temperance Leaguo is pleased to learn that Bishop Crossley is dissatisfied with the present condition of tho liquor traffic in this city, and has asked 'if tho timo has not arrived to unite in burying not a saint,-but a sin in this cityf'

"While of opinion that the funeral cannot take place until after prohibition is carried, wo are in agreement with his Lordship that the people should not wait in contentment with present conditions. Wo strongly repudiate the statement that we, or tho Temperaneo party generally, 'have been content to see the worst conditions that can prevail, and regret that it was made by a gentleman holding the high position of' Bishop of tho Auckland diocese of tho Anglican Church. "This league approve of the Bishop's suggestion, to promote a conference to consider what can he done to alter 'tho condition of the city,' and think that it is desirable to seek immediate legislation to abolish private bars, to reduco the hours in which intoxicants may bo sold, and to reinstato tho appointment of inspectors, with full power to prosecute brewers or wholesale and retail dealers in intoxicating liquors, who in any way increase the poisonous character of acholic liquors.'
