NATIONAL ART GALLERY.

THE FORTHCOMING EXHIBITION,

Excellent progress is being mndo with tho work of converting the, Harbour Board "U" store into an attractive Art Gallery, and Mr. Baiilio hopes to bo in a position to start hanging first thing next week, in readiness for tho opening of the exhibition on Friday afternoon nest. The members of tho council of tho Academy of Pine Arts were given an opportunity yesterday to view some of tho pictures us they were taken from their cases, and the opinion they arrived at was that if tho quality is the same throughout, as a collection it will bo the finest that lias ever been offered for salo in tho Dominion. All the pictures iu this exhibition, with the exception of two, one by ILR.H. tho Duchess of Argyll, and ono by Princess Christian, will bo open for selection and purchaso by tho Academy and by tho public. Tho president of the Academy, after his first view of the pictures, states unhesitatingly that the success of the exhibition is assured.

The first contribution from tho primary schools of 'Wellington and suburbs reached the secretary to tho fund (Mr. J. D. Gray) vesterdnv, the amount being £\ is. 3d. from the Brooklyn School. This is a very gratifying response indeed, and if the remainder of tho twenty-five schools subscribe proportionately thero is no doubt the. aggregate sum will bo sufficient to givo effect to tho idea the organiser, had. in mind when, approaching tho schools, viz., tho pu'rchaso of a'picture for presentation lo tho Notional Gallery by the primary 6chool children of Wollinston.. The total amount raised to date (exclusive of pictures promised) is now i.SM 18s., which includes a donation by the New Zealand Warehousemen's Association of .£SO. In our list published yesterday tho amount opposite the name of Storer, Meek and Co. should havo read ,£5 55., instead of £1 ss.
