The' private cablc message received in New Plymouth recently stated that a premium of Is. 3d. had been bid on the London Stock Exchange for Taranaki Oil shares, and this is probably correct, notwithstanding the fact that the subscription list does not open in Great Britain until Monday, April' 2-2. Whether thiis movement is favourable or otherwise remains to be seen. Operations of this character nearly always take place on the London Stock Exchange in connection with I j new issues, for the "stags" are always 1 1 ready; to do a deal. -A "stag," it may bo explained, is a colloquialism for a speculator who applies for shares on stock in new concerns or issues which are quoted at a premium, hoping to obtain an allotment and sccurc a profit without holding the stock; also one who sells new securities quoted at a premium before allotment, hoping to obtain all or part of hio application, or. if unsuccessful, to secure a profit on a fall iu the market. .
