HASTINGS SLIGHTED.

HON. 11. 0. KI.T, 1,1: RED I'litM HIS A I'POINTM E.\T. (Br Tclcsraph.—Siiccinl Correspondent.) Hastings, April H. 'J'he Postmaster-General, Mr. 11. (.1. Ell, visited Hastings oil Saturday morning and received a. number ot deputations upon niatters of local interest. The. deputations wore .presented by Mr. H. .M. Campbell, Jl.l\ for llawke'.s Hay. The circumstances attending Mr. Ell's visit were not wholly satisfactory to Hastings- residents. In the lirst place the l'osl-

master-Gi'iicral telegraphed to the Mayor (Mr. \V. Harnett) stating that he would arrive in Hastings by Friday night's express. Mr. Ganiett duly made it suit his convenience to meet tluit train, but when it arrived no Mr. Kll was on board. Then .Mr. Garnett was handed a telegram to the effect that Mr. Kll was coming through from AV.iipukurau by ear, and would see him at the Carlton Club Hotel. His Worship thereupon repaired to that hotel, only to find that lie was too late—Mr. Kll had been and gone. It subsequently transpired that the Postmaster-General had been wavlaid at Waipukurau by the member for Napier dir. Vigor Brown!, and that keenest of parish politicians had lured Mr. Kll from the train to a motor-car. Mr. Ell was wislced through direct to Napier, but on the following morning he spared a. couple of hours for Hastings business, after which lie was again hurried off in Mr. Brown's motor-car, and was again the recipient of that genial member's vigorous hospitality.
