MASTERTON NOTES.

The Prime Minister (the Hon. T. Mackenzie) was recently asked to receive n deputation from the local bodies of the Wairarapa on the question of establishing an agricultural college, or high school, in this district. The Premier has replied that he is forwarding the communication to the Hon. the Minister for Education. "If," he says, "the Hon. Mr. Hunan is able to arrange a suitable time for the proposed deputation, I shall endeavour to be present with him." At the meeting of the Wairarapa Presbytery yesterday, a call for the Lansdowne charge was presented to the liev. S- J. Young, and was accepted. The date of ordination ami induction was fixed for April 25. at 'J p.m., in Knox Church. The young woman who was knocked down by a 'motor car on Mondav is more seriously injured than was at first supposed. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening. In the absence of the Mayor, Councillor Elliott presided. A letter was read from the County Council, statin? that April 16 would" be a suitable date .on .which lo hold a conference in reference to the northern approach bridges. The reports of the borough engineer, manager of the abattoirs, custodian of the library, and paundkeoper were read and adopted. The rivers in the district, which were in high flood yesterday, have subsided, and the v;eatlicr to-day is beautifully fine. A number of settlers on the low-lying country adjoining tltc-rivfrs-"had an anxious time while the flood lasted.
ilr. H. H. Reynolds, who has left Mastevton for Stratford, was presented, by a. number of friends with a gold-mounted fountain pen prior (o his departure. At a well-attended meeting of lady hockey players last evening, it was decided'to forma club lo be known as the Mastertan Ladies' Hockey Club. Miss A. O'Lcary was elected captain, and Miss ,7. Miller vice-captain. It was decided lo hold the first practice on Tlmrsdayafternoon.
A partv of Mastertonians made an ascent of Mr. Holdswortli during the Easter holidays. The track was found to be. in excellent order. The only mountain flower now in bloom is the edelveiss.
The mail train from Wellington has been an hour late in its arrival here for the last three nights. Passengers and public are complaining. TVre are at present 313 subscribers to the Mnsterton Library. At a meeting of the Mnsterton Eire Brigade la<t evening it was decided to recommend that the next conference and demonstration be held in Wauganui. A sum of .£ll has been subscribed here towards the relief cf the starving women and children of England. Tor the year ending March 31. the following stock was slaughtered at the Masterton borough abattoirs:—Cattle, 13G0; calves, 91; sheep, 6028; lambs, 10G1; pigs, IS9I.
In tho Magistrate's Court tliis morning, before Justices of the Peace, a man rianied Robert Baege was committed for trial for the alleged theft of a horse, cart and harness the property of Angus Eraser, at Ekctahnna, four years ago. The accused was granted bail. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Hockev Association was held last night. The report and balance-sheet showed a small credit balance. Officers were elected, and it was decided to hold an elevenaside tournament in June. It was also decided to endeavour to create an interest in lioefccv by introducing the game to tlic public schools in the district. At a meeting of director? of the slesterton Co-operative "Dairy Company, the resignation of Mr. E. C. Holmes as a director was received with regret. It was decided to make an advance to lid. per pound for butter-fat for- the ensuing "'.Mr and Mrs. E. Welch left yesterday on a visit to the Old Country _ About fiftv members of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society met yesterday to snv rood-bye to Messrs. E. W. TJobson and Messrs. H. and C. laing. The former is going to Timaru, and the latter on a trip to England. Mr. Eobson was presented with a framed photograph and the Lamebrothers each with n travelling rug and a gold-mounted match-box.
