OTAKI NOTES.

(From Our Special Corrtspondents.) * A residence occupied by Mr. J. M'Chesncy, and owned by Mr. C. A. W. Monckton, was burned to. the ground at To Horo on Monday night, llow the fire originated is not known. All the contents were destroyed, except the piano, hallstand, a table, and a couple of chairs. At the timo of the fire two of the children were seriously ill, and had to be removed to Mr. Monckton's house, nearly a milo away. Several parties, including two from Wellington and one from Palmcrston, made the ascent of Mounts Hector and Omega during the holidays, but the weather proved very unfavourable. One party went fully prepared for a lengthy trip. Mr. A. L. Webster's party, which ascended from the Greytown side, also encountered had weather.

Dr. Patterson, who is acting as locum tenens for Dr. Huthwaito during the latter's visit to England, has arrived hero. Dr. Huthwaite and Mrs. Huthwaite leave for Wellington to-morrow en route for Home.

As a result of tho Druids' sports, hold on Monday in unfavourable weather, the club will be obliged to draw on its reservo fund.

The freehold of the Telegraph Hotel has been sold to Mr. Geo. Dempster for JC2500, while Mr. Truejnan is negotiating for a lease of the Railway Hotel.

. Mr. W. Xanios has sold his farm of 150 acres to Messrs. Nicholls and Simmonds, of Pahautanui. Mr. E. Smith has disposed of his to Mr. Patching. Mr. Hollom has also sold out.

During tho holidays the local Bowling Club held a pairs tournament, A. Satherley and C. Gooding proving the winners. A putting competition was held on the golf links, Byron Brown winning a substantial prize. A local motorist had a narrow escape from a smash lip while journeying through tho Manawatu Gorge during the holidays, owing to a second motorist driving rather fast. ■
