NOTES AND COMMENTS. Jl3v (JLENCOK.) Nominations for the Marlborough Rac» ing Club's autumn meeting close with tin secretary, Mr. L. Grifiiths, at Blenheim, on Saturday. The' stakes for the fourteen events total 4)1500, and with a X3OO Marlborough Cup, tho programme is a most creditable one. A feature of the programme is the third-money prizes, which arc always popular with owners. During tho year the caretaker at Hiverlaiids has again ton-drcsscd tho course, which is in splendid order. Everything points towards a record meeting and a record entry on Saturday. The. defeat of Bronze iu the Groat Autumn Handicap shows how hard it is lor a three-yeur-oid to carry a stone over weight for age, and bo successful. There has been a disposition to rate Bronze as (ho equal of Cruciform and ono or two other giants of the past, but after her showing on Tuesday this question will probably be reconsidered

H. Shanalian, who was injured at Randwick on Monday, was formerly an employee of J. W. Lowe's stables, at Trenthani. C. Bolton, who was in the same smash, is well known at Riccarton, where ho used to ride for C. Piper. Acceptances for the first day's events at tho Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting close to-morrow night. Gold Bird, Odessa, Tuma, Dearest, Gipsy Belle, Effort, Oblignnt, and Miro, are returning from Riccarton by the Mararou this morning. Tho Highden team nro also aboard, and will bo railed home by the Napier mail.

Tho Endeavour Lodge trainer, J, \y. Lowe, showed excellent judgment in withdrawing Mira from the Great Autumn field at Riccarton, and reserving the grey horse for the mile race. Jlr. F. Hall's horse just scrambled home in tho latter event, and was stopping badly at the fin. ish, so any chance of success that he had ill tho twelve-furlongs event could be set down at nil.

It is expected that nearly all the horses weighted in tho Hack and Hunters' Steeples at tho forthcoming Trontham meeting will make tho acceptance, as the race gives owners an admirable opportunily of giving their horses n schooling in public, and a race at this 6tage of the season is most Iwneficial to jumpers. Silver Cluso had his first run in his now owner's colours at Fcilding on Monday, and he gave a good showing, which lie improved on tho following dav. If ho can jump big . fences, the chestnut should bo well in the fighting lino at Trcnthnm,

The hurdle gelding Gold Bird ran very sourly in both his races at Riccartcn. On the second day ho looked to have a good chance at the bottom of tho straight, but he stuck in his toes, and would not finish. In view of tho trouble that occurred when tho gelding won at the November meting after a previous unplaced performance, it is perhaps just as well (hat ho did not win on the second day of the mooting just concluded, Strangely enough, the horse had a change of jockey's at this meeting, just as he did in November, AV, Young riding him on lh« first day and Pine on the second day. The change was rendered necessary on. account of "W. Young contracting to' ride the horses owned by Messrs. Stead Bros., md undertaking not to ride jumpers a) he meeting. -^

Secretary Wkyte, of the Wellinsto: Racing Club, was indisposed and confine* to his room during the holidays, hut hi is now quite well again. T. Pritchard is at present lying in the hospital at Palnierston North, but an attempt will be mado to shift him to his home at the Hutt later on in the week.

During tho week the Waikahae stud marcs, which had been at Eldorslie visitins Charlemagne 11, were returned, home. Fireside (dam of Firciron, winner of tho Great Easter Handicap in 1907) died on tho voyage. Her loss was a severe one, as sho was in foal to Charlemagne 11.

By yesterday's mail from Sydney. Mr. 0. S. Watkins received advice that his Charlemagne ll—Sequin filly, which had been sent to the Sydney yearling sab's, broke a leg when being taken off Hie si earner, and hat', to be destroyed. The filly was a half-sister to Sea Queen, jib! in view of the latter's recent successes, tun yearling ought to have sold for at least 250 or 300 guineas. Tho loss is therefore a severe one, but Mr. Watkins had insured her for 100 guineas, so that there will bo some balance when expenses are paid.

In (he Press Association account of the first day's racing at Feilding, Makara was placed third in the Maugnone Stakes. The placing should have been Makara sec oiid and Gladiole third.

Sea Queen's latest winning performance at Tauheriniknn makes it apnear that she is a much better performer than most people had believed. The daughter of St. Ambrose lias been a consistent, performer right through her career, and seems to be still on the improve. At two years she started six times, and was placed on three occasions; at three years she filled places eight times out of i 9 starts; at four years, twelve times out of 21 starts; and already this season she has been placed 13 times out of 19 starts. Altogether she has started in 65 races, winning 14. being 10 times second and a down times third, and earning about ,£I7OO. FIXTURES. April 17 and 20—Wellington R.C. Autumn, April 24 and 25—Manawatu R.C. Autumn, May 1 and 2—Marlborough R.C. Autumn. May 1 and 2—Hayke's Bay J.C. Autumn.
