A good second-day crowd turned out, and the racing was nearly as good as on the first day. The totalisator money on Miss Vena, who ran second in the Scurry, was impounded pending tho result of a protest. In tho opening event tho public strongly supported Merrimac, who had Deeley in the saddle. Tho favourite, was unlucky at the turn, where tho field closed on him as he was trying to get through on the rails, and he was sent right back. This spoilt his chances. Lord Renown, who was evidently much improved by the race he had the first day, took charge soon after the start, and was not again headed. Mira could not go the pace, and in tho first part none of the others seemed disposed to go out aftor Lord Renown. Waiouru, who only arrived from Foxton in tho morning, was a fresh horse ill tho Telephono Handicap. Old Naumai, looking fresh and well, was the favourite, but many of his usual backers stood off, thinking tho long, straight would beat 'him. As a matter of fact, he seemed to stay on better. After appearing to be in trouble at the bottom of tho straight ho came on again and won easily. Tho pace was too fast for Tc Roti at the start, and the first day's winner was well beaten.
Yesterday's form pointed to Miss Roberts as the best of the Scurry field, but the public were waiting and waiting for Decley to win a race, and his mount, Karoro, was a better favourite than Miss Roberta. Panthca, on .tho Tuils, and Miss A r ena were the quickest to begin, but Miss Roberts was always handy, and in the' straight she came fast on the outside, and won a good race by a length. Thcro was a complaint laid after the race tment tho ownership of tho second horse, but the matter was adjourned. Toney was a better favourite than, Elfish in the High Weight Handicap, and after Divinia had played np badly and delayed the rise of tho barrier tho rider of Toney eventually anticipated it, and was not headed. .The winner seems a good useful hack, cud at the weights would heat the same field. He is by Advance from a Natator mare, and was ridden by Mr. Melville Bull. Prince Eddie was in second position till tho last hundred yards, when ho tired to nothing. The Autumn Handicap was the big event of the afternoon's raciDg. The hotting was confined to two horses, Sinapis (Deelcy) and Golden Loop , (Ryan). The former was a slightly better favouritethan tho New Plymouth horse, and onco again the public was proved to be right, for the pair ran first and second, and the eight furlongs was timed as lmin. llsec. St. Felix acted as pacemaker from Sinapis and Bally Shannon till the four-furlong post, when the latter took charge. In the straight Ryan brought Goldoa Loop along, and in a fine finish heat Sinapis by a length and a half. The latter got a clear, run on the rails, but Golden Loop's run was irresistible. The Rover and Sea Queen wore just behind tho placed horses. Allurement, who had tho scrriees of W. Young, was the best backed in tho Railway Hack Handicap, with Nukuatu and Aloha in that order. The field gave a lot of bother at tho barrier, and eventually tho favourite was left. Nukuatu was the first to become prominent, but Simple Sam soon headed him, and was not again troubled. Allurement finished well, and beat all but the winner. Goldsley, Aloha, and Kingswell were tho last to pass tho post.
Te Roti, who was making bis fourth appearance at the meeting, proved tho winner of tho Welter, in which the Trenfham mare Effort was a strong favourite. Full Rate was. in charge when the field settled flown, andlialf-way down the straight he looked- to have the raco to himself, but Effort then came- on tho scene, and her victory was. loudly pro-, claimed. However, To Roti came fast on the outside, and in tho last few strides ho caught up and won. C. Jenkins, who rode the winner, was received with a round of applause on returning to tho weighing enclosure. Tho winner.is an apt illustration of tho "horses for courses" motto, as at this meeting last year he won three races. Another big field contested the last raco, which went to Leapuki after an interesting struggle with Allurement and Amber and White. The latter went down very well in the preliminary, and , many good judges selected it to win. Allurement was unlucky in being; badly stopped at the turn into, the straight. A.J.C. Queen's Prize did her early racing in tho A r orth Island, but her only win thero was in a Farmers' Plato at Fa tea. Last season she was raced in Southland without success, but during the present season she has won several races in that district, the most important being tho Gladstone Handicap on tho second day of tho Southland Facing Club's summer meeting.
. Haskayne, Idealism, Bootlo, Outward. Our King, and Our Queen have arrived at Auckland to fulfil their engagements at tho autumn meeting. Lady Medallist, tho top-weight in tho Doncaster Handicap, is encased at the Hawkesbury meeting this afternoon. Polymorphous will not bo raced again this season.
As tho Manawatu Racing Club's autumn meeting follows closely upon tho Trontham fixture, tho Wellington Racing Club is arranging for a special- train- to run from Trentham to Awapunt on tho day following tho close of-the meeting for the convenience Of all tho trainers, who havo horses engaged at tho' Manawatu meeting.
Iho smart 2-vear-old Ermeugarde has done well on tbo racing and travelling that sho has had during tho season, and when she was being shipped on tho Maori for Lyttelton yesterday sho looked in the pink of condition. In the Challenge Stakes at Riccarton next Tuesday week "Mr. Highden's" fillv will havo to carry 7st. 91b. A. Oliver will not bo nblo to rido her and as yet no jockey has been definitely engaged. It is understood, however, that W. Ryan will havo tho mount if his services aro available. Ryan returned from Syd7ioy on Wednesday last and quickly showed form by riding a couplo of winners at tho Masterton meeting.
Efforts «ro being mado by tho Wellington Racing Club to arrango a match between Bronzo and Counterfeit over 12 furlongs to bo run at the Trentham Autumn, meeting next month. Tho owner of Bronze has expressed his willingness to allow tho Field Battery filly to run, and Mr. A. K. YVbyt?, secretary of tho club, has written to Sir Geo. Clifford to see 1 if he will allow Counterfeit to run. If Sir George consents, the club will allot a 100-guinea trophy for tho match, which will certainly arouse great interest.
Nominations for the Manawatu Racing Club's' autumn meeting will closo on April 2 at' 10 a.m. ■ It is gratifying to note (says an English' writer) that although South America, tbo United States, .Kussia, and Germany havo during tho last fifteen years acquired a-number of our Derby winners, and others havo died, there are, in Messrs. Weatherby's list no fewer than nine heroes of tho bluo Riband down for stud duty this season. In Auckland, Kakama is favourite for the Easter Handicap, to bo run at Ellcrslie to-morrow week. The annals of sport would not, perhaps, require to bo too diligently searched (says the "Arrow") for the discovery of records of instances in which judges have been rushed and maltreated by dissatisfied human competitors; but tho pony which deliberately charged and upended tho judge's box and its occupants nt tho Pyramid Hill (Vic.) meeting the other day has surely created a precedent, Fortuna'clv, beyond a few. scratches, none of the officials were hurt; but one of the bystanders sustained a broken jaw, and another a fractured rib.' ■ ■
