PETONE, 9; MELROSE, NIL. The usual benefit match between Petone and Mclroso was played on tho l'etono ground on Saturday. Thero was an attendance of about 250 spectators, and the gymnasium funds of each club will benefit to tho extent of about .£lO. Neither team was at its full strength, but for a "first of season" it was a good game, at times very fast. Tho llolroso backs were uncomfortable, and continually used tho toiichline. Petone's rearguard occasionally made somo fine combined movements. In the first spell Guthrie, after a fine forward rush, got ovor lor Petone, and in tho second half 11'Farlane kicked a penalty from near the half-way. W. Ryan, after a fine passing bout, brought the score to 9—o in favour of Petone. Mr. Card refcreed.
