Some objection was taken by City Councillors, last evening to a recommendation by tho By-Laws Committee that a property owner at Island Bav be granted a monthly permit to light fires at "his property, on tho condition that ho notified the Fire Brigade every morning he intended lighting a fire.—The' clause in tho committee's report was according referred back.

On the recommendation of the Museum Advisory Committee, the City Council has authorised tho extension of tho museum at Neu-town .Library. The City Engineer estimates the cost of alteration to the lecture hall to bo about .£2, i. Tho Advisory Committee has also been empowered to consider the. question of the appointment of n. curator for the museum. The latter step was urged upon the council last , evening by a deputation, headed by Professor Kirk, who stated that tho Advisory Committee appointed to deal with matters . concerning tho museum wero unable to do all th>st was necessary if tho institution was to bo tho credit to the city it ns no doubt wished to be. Tho man required to fill the position of curator should bo one who was qualified in various special directions.

Tho chairman of the City Council's Libraries Committee (Councillor Hindmarsh), Councillors Atkinson, and Trevor (members), and Professor Von Zedlitz have henn appointed to represent tho cnunr.il at the conference of the. Libraries' Association of New Zealand, to ho held at Wellington during Easter. The Chief Librarian has been authorised to make the necessary arrangements for the entertainment of the. Library Conference delegates' whilst in Wellington.
