NOTES ON THE UACINQ. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Nelson, March 21. Similar weather to the first day was experienced to-day, and a largo crowd turned out. Matters wont smoothly nil day, and the racing was interesting.' In the big handicap, Waipnnui, Deacon, and Astonishment tinislu'd within a length of each other, and tho crowd showed its appreciation by loud cheering. Beacon ran up to his iirst. day's form, but Waipiavui improved a. bit,* nnd so did Astonishment. In tho opening event, Amberstono was a better favourite than Mount Victoria, with. Deeley's mount, Bridegroom, well backed. Tho Hutt horse drew No. 1 position, a big advantage at this post, while Amberstono was on the outsido. At tho start Mount Victoria jumped ■ \itwnrds, ajid squeezed up the other runners. This gave, the Signalman gelding a good start, which he maintained till the finish. Amberstone finished fourth.
In the first trot Stella Leigh and Maud' Allerton were the public fancies, and they finished first and second, after a keen tussle. The first day's winaer took charge a mile from home, but Ifaud Allerton caught and passed her at tho bottom of the straight. A keen struggle took place, aiid Mnud Allerton, breaking up somo fifty yards oil' iho post, nllowett Stella Leigh to iu>t win. In the big haudieip tho money ,was piled on Waipunui, and after a greatYaco the AVest Coast horse just struggled home. By obtaining No. 1 position, and being first round tho top turn, Deeloy got a big advantage on the favourite, and going down the back he was able to give him a spell, but without nllowing Beacon to get too big a break. A furlong from home he moved up to the lender, and Astonishment also put in a claim, but failed to see it out. YUiipunui stuck to his task, and Beacon also mado a great effort, but the. favourite-, ridden right out, won by three-; quarters of a length, with Astonishment close up.
Tho first scratchings of the day wern recorded in the Stoke Hack Handicap, in which Excitement and Currency Lass were withdrawn. Long Tom. after (inlaying the start for eomo time, was sent, .back to the paddock. The start wns a. pood one, Portland Lady and Paunton leading from I.adronn. The first-named ran wide at tho lurn into Iho straight, and Hatch pushed Ladrone up on the fence. He held his own in tlie run home, and won by a. couple, of lengths, but without the advantage gained at the him he might havo been in third place. The second trot looked a good thing for Grattou Chimes when half the journey had been covered, but after taking charge just beforo entering the straight, he broko up, and finished out of a place. Storm Clmid, who wns running second, then camn aw'iv, nnd won easily.
Form pointed to. Sinapis as tho best of good things for tho Wnimea Handicap, and the little mare won nicely. Merchantman led till well down the straight, when Deeley shook up the favourite, and sho came away full of running, and won by a couple of lengths. Merchantman was a. neck in front of Daunton. Tho winner was the hottest favourite of the meeting. Dcolcy had his seventh winning ride .it. the meeting wlien Portland Bill, who was a hot favourite in the Hack Welter strolled in from , tho three moderates who opposed him. Despite his big impost, the Ctmiueror gelding won with nis ears Slicked and full of running, giving a flat enial to the suggestion that the distance was beyond him. Merchantman and Astonishment wore ■withdrawn from tho concluding event, which was ft phenomenally good betting race, over .£IOOO lain? invested. T. Pritchard had tho mount on Beacon, Tapp rode Curator, and Denier Seraphic. This trio were all well backed. Beacon got all the best of tho start, and led down tho back from Curator and Seraphic. Dceley slipped the last named up on tho fenco j mid won comfortably. Beacon stopped badly over tho last bit, and Curator beat him "for second jplace. Tan San was n long way back.
