HOME SCIENCE.
OTAGO UNIVERSITY'S EXPERIMENT. Professor Boys-Smith, of tho Otago University, is very pleased with the result of the first year s work of the Homo Science Department of tho university, established under her control Ja.-t year. Her proposals for tho establishment of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Homo Science have been confirmed !>y the Senate of the University of New Zealand, and the degree course will bo a feature of the work undertaken this year at O.t'ago University. "The principal aim of the course," the professor, is reported as saying, in a southern paper, "is to provide a thoroughly scientific education for women in the principles underlying the conduct and organisation of home life, in order (o equip them well for the part they have to" play. All subjects connected with tho household will be dealt with both scientifically and practically. Tho courses in the domestic urts—cookery, needlework, laundrywork, and housewifery—are planned to enable students to investigate for themselves tho principles underlying tho arts of tho household. I exot-'ct the degree 'course to train tho future lecturers and teachers as well as as women of distinctly intellectual bent who tako an interest in tho principles which their home life is based." Three Sections, Tho degree course is divided into three distinct rectioi:.*, one lor each year's work. Tho subjects for tho first year aro chemistry (inorganic and organic), ' physics, needlework, and tho management of household business aiTairs, the last of the four covering, what promises to be ai: exceedingly practical course in business ii'ielhods. Tho second year is to l>3 devoted to tho sludv of biology, .the first part of applied chemistry (application to cookery) and practical cookery.. The course in applied chemistry includes about twentyfive lectures and J 2O hours' practical work in the kitchen laboratory, and the work is concerned largely with the study of tho nutrient constituents of food and their functions, tlie relations of 'he process;'* of cookery to their fundamental principles, and even the detection of adulterants in food. The arrangements for tho practical cookery classes provide for about 125 hours' work during the year. Jt is intended to include a summer as well as a winter session in (ho third year. The two sessions will lie occupied with the study of physiology, hygiene, and sanitary science, together with the second part of applied chemistry (laundry work and housewifery) and household economics. The aim of the whole course for tho degree will be to ensure the attainment by students of a standard of general knowledge equivalent to that demanded by the university for other pass degrees, as well as to make them thoroughly acquainted wilh the subjects which aro particularly within the province of the home science department. Tho proposals approved by the Senate have permitted some Latitude in tho arrangement' of '.he course, and Professor Boys-Smith, who obviously has been to great trouble- to ascertain the requirements of this country, believes that tho scheme she has adopted will prove satisfactory.
The Diploma Course, The diploma course is one which the professor hopes to make very popular. "This course," she explained, 'lias born planned to meet the needs of two classes of women students, those, who intend to take up home duties and who consequently desire to become really efficient in home management, and those wlio intend to become, ttachers, but wish for a more general education than that provided for specialists in the degree course, and at the same, time desire to gain a thorough and practical knowledge of the domestic arts together with Ihu scientific principles underlying thtni. Candidates lor the diploma "must ho over sixteen years of age, and must have passed the matriculation examination or the. Civil Service Junior examination or tho Civil Serjects, or some equivalent test approved by tho Professorial Board of Otago University. Tho title of 'Associate of Otago University in Home Science and Arts' and the diploma will be conferred on students who have kept university terms for two years 01 longer, and have passed the Otago University examinations in certain subjects." ' The subjects required for the diploma arc elementary inorganic and organic chemistry, elementary physics and dynamics, ths chemistry of cookery, laumirywork and housewifery, practical cookery, practical laundry work and housewifery, needlework, physiology and hygiene, household economics and business affairs, and English.
