At a meeting of those interested this afternoon, the Mayor presiding, it was decided to hold a. cycle and motor-cycle sporls mceling on May 27, in aid of the iunds'nf the Pnlmerston Bra«s Hand.
The Terraco End Bowling Club has arranged to hold a gaslight 'bowling tournament on its green on 'Wednesday evening next. Kinks from tho I'almersto;!, Woodville, Khandallah, IVilding, levin, Shannon, and th-o local club will be taking part in the contest. Tha committee has also arranged for a programme of instrumental and vocal musics to bo played in the social hall in the pavilion.
A mountaineering parly, comprising members of the Palmorston Men's Social Club, is being organised by Misses Glun(linning to visit Mount Ruapehu, at an early date. Miss Glendinning, who inaugurated the Social Club, has had a good deal of experience in mountaineering in other countries, A. fine programme of music was rendered at the Esplanade yesterday afternoon by tho Palmorslon Brass Band, and was greatly appreciated by a large crowd of people who had assembled in the grounds. The afternoon was gloriously fine. "Tho World of Space as Revealed by tho Astronomical Telescope," is the subject o[ a lecture to bo given at the next meeting of the Manawatu Philosophical Society by Mr. .T. T. Ward. Tho address will be illustrated with lantern slides. During the height of the tropical downpour on Friday afternoon last, a motor cyclist attempted to ride through a small lake which had formed 'in ono of the streets. The result was quite a surprise to the rider, who tuniod a complete somersault and disappeared for a moment in some eighteen inches of water. Beyond tho surnrise and o very complete wettiii;. , , the cyclist suffered no damage. Two motor cars Ira veil ing round a P;ilmcrstou street corner at e. pretty fust pace came into collision. Ono car iv*>t a wheel, but no damage was done to the other. The occupants of both cars escaped unhurt.
