HEAVY WORK AHEAD.
4 CLASSIFICATION APPEALS. Yesterday was the final day appointed for receiving appeals from officers in the Civil Service against the classification ecliemo which has of late been tho subject of a groat denl'of discussion, The Classifi. cation Board now has a big task ahead of it in dealing with tho avalanche of appeals that have come in. The Hon. D. Buddo, on being'questioned yesterday, declared himself quite unable to say deGnitely how long the board would take to carry out this portion of its duty. Tho appeals, ho stated, would have to lie referred to a committee, and it would take 60H10 considerable time to bring tho whole matter before the board again. Tho immediate task of tho board will be completed when it has dealt with tho appeals, and a resolution of the House will then. 1)0 the only thing required to bring the classification into effect. The whole of tho board's work, Mr. Huddo remarked, was controlled by the Act under which it was constituted, and necessarily the board had had to work within certain specified limits. This was a point which a good many officers seemed to have overlooked. Although the classification of the. Civil Service is within measurable distance of being completed, for the time being, provision is made in tho Act for subsequent readjustments, for tho -lodging of appeals by officers in tho future, and the consideration of such appeals by the board, which, is to enjoy a continued existence. "One must rccognisp," Mr. Buddo remarked, "that in a growing community such ns this is, tho public service must grow in proportion to tho population, and no doubt tliore are circumstances in which the classification will have to be reviewed. It must bo elnstic, and tho Act mak«s provision accordingly,"
