THE WAY TO DO IT.

AUCKLAND AND THE GOVERNMENT.

(By Teiejrraph.-Special Correspondent.) Auckland, March 12. Auckland lias como to'the conclusion that the method of asking the Government to carry out important public works is out of date, and that tho ijuicltest and surest method of securing its wants is to elect members of the lieform party. At last election several faithful Government electorates kicked over tho traces and threw out tho Government candidates. Now Cabinet hns been falling over itself to do things for Auckland. Auckland has now only to ask to have. Firstly, Auckland had vainly agitated and held indignation meetings for a long timo over the failure to comMenco the East Coast line from tho Waihi end. Tho Prime Minister turned the first sod yestcr- , day and assured his hearers that the work would be commenced at once. Incidentally he rang in a good deal of electioneering speech matter. To-day he is turning another first sod. Mr. Millar has been deputationisod and written to and petitioned ever sinco ho became a Minister over the railway goods sheds, Parnell tunnel, and the wretched services on tho suburban and Ivaipara railways; but there was nothing done. Now, however, Mr. Millar discovers Ai.ekland badly needs new goods sheds, and is to have them at once. Ho recognises that the duplication of the tunnel will be a necessity at an early (late. He has put en an express on the Kaipara line, vi'A is anxiously scanning tho suburban timetables to' see what he can do for tk'ssi insatiable Aucklnnders. Auckland is beginning to say to ifse.f. "Now, isn't tliero something else I thought of?" On the whole, it pays to reject Government candidates. Politicians are wondering whether the Government is getting ready for a. dissolution.
