HOSTILITY TO CHINESE.
STREET BLOCKED FOR HOURS. Bj Teleeratin.-Pres» iiusotatlon.l Christchurch, March 10. At the Magistrate's Court oh Saturday Mr. W. Bishop, S.M., dismissed an information against a fruit hawker who was charged with having obstructed the freo use of Cashel Street on February 21. The case rose out of. a demonstration against Chinese fruiterers who have just opened a shop. Last night there was another demonstration, a large crowd congregating outside tho Chinese shop, and blocking tho roadway for two or three hours. Three stones were thrown, one of which went through the shop window. Two men were arrested on charges of being drunk and disorderly ,and ono for assaulting a policeman. Whilst the latter was putting one of the arrested men into a cab, a man came behind him and (it is alleged) kicked him. This man was promptly arrested by .another policeman. Tho crowd as a whole, however, were fairly quiet, and when it became known that a number of constables in plain clothes were present very little active demonstration was made.
