Fruit.-The Jlaitai, from Karotonga, left behind about 70 per cent, of the cargo of bananas' offering, owing to bad weather and also to th 3 fact that the steamer , was late, in arriving at tho Cook Islands. The wholo of the fruit left behind will most probably bo dumped overboard, as thoro is no other steamer available to bring the fruit on to Jfsw Zealand. For the fruit that the Maitai did bring highly satisfactory prices were realised. The Hauroto, from, Fiji, reached port last Thursday, bringing only a moderate shipment of Fijian bananas, and fruit in sound condition sold at profitable rates. Weekly supplies of grapss are coming forward from Sydney, and so far the results have been disastrous to the shippers. A good de- ■ mand exists for plums and peaches. Pears arc in heavy eupply, and selling at low prices; tomatoes are also in excess. Dessert apples have improved in valuo slightly since our last report. Supplies of Island oranges are due early nest week by the Navua.
Vegctablcs.-Cabbagea arc- selling at extremely low prices, and so also aro French beans. Carrots and parsnips meet with good inquiry. Graen peas are. in strong demand, and consignments are recommended.
Onions.—The market' is hare of supplies, and prices range from 9s. to Us. per cwt., according to quality. Potatoes.-Fairly shipments of southern grown are coming forward, ajid prices 4s. to ss. per cwt. for prime,quality, but much lower rates have to bo accepted for inferior Quality. Pollard is in very short supply, and is selling at £7 10?. to £8 per ton. Bran has fair inquiry a,t £5 15s. per ton. Flour—A good demand exists for old flour at £8 10s.. f.0.b., less the usual discount, The freight, on flour has been advanced Is. per ton. Oatina in 41b bags is unchanged at 103. per dozen,.with rolled oats at Bs. 6d. Oatmeal is dull of sale at £14 10s. rer ton. Oats.—New season's duns and feed Algerian are quoted at !<;. lid. per bushelshort white feed, 2s. 10d. to 3s. Chaff is ruling at £4 ss. to £4 15s. per ton, sacks in, according to quality. Cape Barley.—Good samples of feed are selling at 3s. 9d. to 4s. per bushel. Feed barley is dull of sale at 3s. 3d. Baled straw is in plentiful supply at 60s. to 70s. Maize—There is only a moderate business passing at 4s. 6d. to 4s. Bd. Hams and Bacon.—The- market ig very firm. Haw? and sides, 9d.; rolls, 93d.; shoulders, 73d. Fresh eggs are in steady demand at Is. 3d. to Is. 4d., preserved Is. to Is. Id. Butter continues in strong demand prime bulk milled 11». to lljd. Cheese has pood inquiry, medium 7d., Poultry.—Hens 2s. 6d. to 3s. per pair; roosters, 3s. to 45.; ducks, 4s. to Js. Customs duties collected at the port of Wellington yesterday amounted to £2353 10s. THE GRAIN MAKKET. Chrlstchurch, March 5. The local wheat market ksens firm and steady, ther.3 being a good demand for all well-conditioned lots that are offered. The delays in harvesting and threshing that are taking place through broken weather ac 2 causing growers who have successfully secured their grain in sacks to ask a little more, and in order to secure supplies buyers have had to make some advance in their prices. Several sales havo been reported at 3s. sd. at country stations for prime lines in good condition. Oats are maintaining their value well in spite of tho withdrawal of Australian buyers. Up to 2s. at country stations is still being paid for "A" grade Gartons, and Duns have sold up to Is. lid. The rain of th 3 last week has caused a further dolav in harvesting, threshing, and delivering grain. Prime malting barley still meets with a good demand. There is a difference of fully Is. per bushel in the price of maltin" barley, the range being about 4s. to 5s 3 the latter price, it is reported, having been paid for one or two extra prime laro= lines from well-known growers.
Grass seed is rather firmer on account of tho unfavourable reports of the crop in Southland, where tl-.B continued wet weather has prevented it being paved. WHEAT AXD FLOCE. The Argentine meat shipments for February were:-Mutton, 221,873 carcasses; lamb, 78,780 carcasses; frozen hecf. 122,250 quarters; chilled beef, 148,500 quarters. SILVER. Bar silver, is quoted at 27d. per ounce standard.
