CHINESE CONSUL'S COMPLAINT.

A DISTURBANCE TN CHBISTCRUKCH. (By Teleeraph-Prcss Association.) Christchurch, February 28. The Chinese Consul at Wellington hns addressed to tlic Mayor (Mr. J. J. Dougnll) a letter of complaint arising out of disturbances before a newly-instituted CliiuoEo fruit shoo in Cashel Street on Saturday night. The Consul says: "It is some months now since, when visiting your beautiful city, I had iho pleasure and honour of culling on you to pay my respects, and 1 with delight recall the courtesy and goodwill shown to mo on that occasion. Knowing tlmt you are in sympathy with the struggle of my countrymen in this land to earn n livelihood, and confident that you would liko nothing but fair play extended to (hem, 1- take the liberty of drawing your kind attention to the disturbances which you have doubtless read of in the Christchurch newspapers, and which occurred in your city on Saturday night in relation to tho newly-established Chinc-o fruit shop of WahLee, inCashol Street, which some of the Kuropean fruiterers, and hooligans attempted illegally, and through jealousy, to overthrow, and to respectfully request (hat you will bo kind enough to see your way id exercise such a favourable influence as to contribute to preventing a recurrence of such unlawful and arbitrary procedure against my countrymen. F would, indeed, feel deeply gratified if you could use your kindly offices to ■.■aim (he passions of these unreasonable men so that justice may be accorded to the subjects of a friendly nation who at all times endeavour to live neaceably with their European brethren." The Mayor has replied informing the Consul'that he had already communicated with the police on tho matter, and has requested them to take such steps us will prevent a repetition of the disturbance.
