Tho High Court fined Horatio Bottomley £100 for contempt of Court, the contempt consisting of the publication of a slanderous article in his newspaper, "John Bull," because the Prudential Assurance Company refused to participate in his bankruptcy scheme to pay 7s. Bottomley was subjected to a searching cross-examinntion, directed to show that his newspaper "John Bull" denounced financial swindlers, and afterwards published their advertisements. Bottomley admitted that he had authorised a barrister to hint to the Prudential Company's representatives (hat ho was willing to publish no further attacking articles if the Prudential Company agreed to his bankruptcy scheme. Tho Judges said that Bottomley's own evidence had chiefly convinced them that a chargo of blackmail could bo established. It would be useless to inflict n heavy fine, sinco the editors would have to pay.
